Understanding Vata, Pitta and Kapha: A Beginner’s Guide

The three doshas are the foundation of Ayurvedic understanding. Here's what they mean and why your doctor talks about them.

Ayurveda describes three functional principles in the body — Vata, Pitta and Kapha, together called the doshas. Every person has a unique combination of these, known as Prakriti (body constitution).

Vata — movement

Vata governs movement: breathing, circulation, nerve impulses and elimination. When balanced, it supports creativity and flexibility. When aggravated, it may show up as dryness, pain, stiffness, anxiety or irregular digestion.

Pitta — transformation

Pitta governs digestion, metabolism and body heat. Balanced Pitta supports sharp intellect and good digestion; excess Pitta may contribute to acidity, irritability and inflammation.

Kapha — structure and stability

Kapha provides structure, lubrication and stability. Balanced Kapha gives strength and calmness; excess may lead to heaviness, congestion and weight gain.

Why this matters in treatment

Your physician considers both your Prakriti and the current imbalance (Vikriti) when choosing medicines, therapies and diet. This is why two people with the same diagnosis may receive different Ayurvedic treatment plans.
